چکیده
Background. Giant dumbbell-shaped tumors are very rare and characterized by intraand extraspinal propagation of different dimensions. In thoracal localization, invasive growth can lead up to rib and vertebra erosion. Case report. We presented a 54-year-old woman with a giant dumbbell schwannoma in the posterior mediastinum. The tumor was removed by the posterior approach with hemilaminectomy and costotransversectomy. By microscopic examination the diagnosis of benign schwannoma was made. A year after the surgery, the patient was without neurological deficiency and without radiological signs of illness relapse. Conclusion. Treatment of dumbbell schwannoma is surgical, dilemmas of the optimal surgical approach. When it is thoracally located the posterior approach with hemilaminectomy and costotransversectomy is safe and effective for its removal.

Single stage complete resection of giant dumbbell lumbar ganglioneuroma: a case report and review of the literature
Background: Ganglioneuroma is a rare benign tumor, which is usually located in the posterior mediastinum and retroperitoneum. Occasionally, it involves the paraspinal region with intraspinal extension and becomes dumbbell shaped. Dumbbell ganglioneuromas rarely affect the lumbar spine, and only nine cases of dumbbell lumbar ganglioneuromas have been reported previously. Case presentation: We ar...
متن کاملPreferred surgical approach for dumbbell-shaped tumors in the posterior mediastinum.
We present the case of a 67-year-old male smoker with a posterior mediastinal hemangioma. Radiological findings revealed a dumbbell-shaped tumor with a neuroforaminal extension in the right paravertebral space. Under the preoperative diagnosis of a neurogenic tumor, surgery was performed using a combined anterior and posterior approach. During the thoracotomy, the tumor was found to be a hemang...
متن کاملSurgery for posterior mediastinal dumbbell tumors: A case report
INTRODUCTION Mediastinal dumbbell tumors are rare, and special cases provide valuable knowledge to the existing literature. PRESENTATION OF CASE A 57-year-old woman was diagnosed with a recurrent dumbbell-shaped nerve sheath tumor with intrathoracic and intraspinal components. We attempted to resect the tumor via combined biport thoracoscopy and laminectomy with the patient in a prone positio...

Two patients with giant dumbbell foramen magnum neurinomas are reported. The intradural component was located anterior to the cervicomedullary junction while the extradural and extraspinal portion of the tumor had grown large enough to present as a neck swelling. In both patients total surgical removal was achieved by a single-stage posterior midline approach. Both patients had complete neurolo...
متن کاملEndoscopic resection of thoracic paravertebral and dumbbell tumors.
OBJECTIVE Neurogenic paravertebral tumors are uncommon neoplasms arising from neurogenic elements within the thorax. These tumors may be dumbbell shaped, extending into the spinal canal or exclusively paraspinal. Generally encapsulated, they are located in the posterior mediastinum. In this report, we present our experience in the thoracoscopic resection of these tumors, including surgical tech...
